Orthokeratology is the practice of reshaping the cornea with the use of a hard contact lens while you're asleep. Orthokeratology or ortho K can correct myopia (short-sightedness) as well as moderate amounts of hyperopia (long-sightedness). At Sydney Myopia Clinic we use Australian, Japanese, and American contact lens laboratories to fit our patient's with the best lenses for their individual needs. This way we are able to correct higher amounts of myopia and astigmatism than conventional orthokeratology.
Atropine in an very low concentration eye drop form has been shown to play a important role in reducing myopic progression in children and teens. It is particularly useful if orthokeratology is not appropriate or possible. At a 0.01-0.02% it has very few side effects, but many studies overseas and at the Brien Holden Vision Institute have shown very promising results
Not all spectacles are the same. At Sydney Myopia Clinic we also assess the suitability for your child for myopia control spectacles. These are digitally surfaced spectacle lenses that help reduce myopic progression where contact lenses are not possible or desired.
Your optometrist will also educate you and your child on health, screen time, diet, and lifetsyle factors that contribute to myopic progression. Ortho-K, atropine, and spectacles are only part of a wholistic approach myopia control.
